My knowledge about CSS is limited to the basics as working in a team we have people who are responsible for the tough task of CSS layout every day. This is one of the harsh realities of the differences between web browsers that we have all suffered at some point in time.In this book we learn about layout designs for both fixed width and liquid layout. Concerning design with elastic or liquid layout the book has 2 chapters that deal with these two layouts in basic form with its application to more sophisticated designs.
One of the chapters is targeted at the shirkers amongst us or those that are still designing with tables.
Since a lot of the things that the book deals with are already well-known once you start reading the book, I skipped to the final chapter where you’ll find the latest things about building a gallery site with CSS and Spry. Here we find a real tutorial step by step, just like the whole book in itself, on how to create a gallery of images using the technologies mentioned. In the tutorial we use the menu bar to create the navigation of the example site. We also see how to customize the appearance of the menu bar along with its submenus and finally we arrive at building the Spry Sliding Panels and main content area.

The whole book has some nice points which I enjoyed way beyond the tutorial – on the sides of each page you will find notes and tips that in some cases you’ll be familiar with and in others you’ll think to yourself “Aha!, so that’s how you do it”.

I think a novice or a recently initiated designer in the world of cascading style sheets will find this book a great help along with the step by step tutorials that it offers.

Perhaps many chapters of this book wouldn’t offer any great knowledge to the experts among us but I’m quite sure the book contains a few surprises and might even provoke the odd “Aha!”

Sus autores  que tienen un par apariciones en adobe.tv (Adobe at NAB 2008 – Flash for videos Pros & PeachPit TV for Designers – Greg Rewis & Stephanie Sullivan) nos brindan parte de su conocimiento sobre css que nos llega en un libro compuesto de 6 capítulos.

Mi conocimiento sobre css se limita a lo básico ya que al trabajar en equipo hay personas que diariamente se encargan de la dura tarea del maquetado. Dura producto de las diferencias entre navegadores que todos hemos sufrido en algún momento.

En este libro aprenderemos como maquetar tanto diseños de ancho fijo como líquido. En lo que se refiere a diseño elástico o líquido se lleva 2 capítulos tratándolo de forma básica y aplicándolo a diseños más complejos.

Uno de los capítulos está orientado a los “remolones” al cambio y que aún diseñan con tablas.

Dado que muchas cosas que se tratan ya son conocidas al leer el libro he avanzado al capítulo final donde estaba lo más “nuevo” css sobre la conocida librería spry. Aquí nos espera un verdadero tutorial paso a paso, como todo el libro en sí, para crear una galería de imágenes utilizando las tecnologías mencionadas. En el tutorial aplicaremos la barra de menú para crear la navegación del sitio de ejemplo,  barra de menús con submenús incluidos que veremos cómo personalizar su estética. Paneles de desplazamiento y área de detalle.

Todo el libro tiene un detalle que me ha gustado más allá de verlo muy tutorial y es que en los laterales de cada página encontraremos notas y tips que en algunos casos conocerás y en otros te dirás “Ah!! era así”

A mi parecer un usuario novato o en proceso de iniciarse en el mundo de las hojas de estilo en cascada encontraran una gran ayuda y recomendable realizar los paso a paso que nos proponen.

Los más expertos quizás muchos capítulos no les aporten grandes conocimientos pero seguro obtendrán alguna que otra sorpresa y quizás hasta les provoque un “Ah!!  era así”

An authentic Bible and guidebook about a program that many of us use on a daily basis which focuses on the main technologies mentioned on its front cover; CSS, AJAX and PHP.

The guide begins with an introduction by the famous Tom Muck covering the process of development starting with the configuration of the Web development environment with PHP and finishing with the implementation of the SPRY library.

In its various chapters we take a look at the creation of styles, building site navigation with the Spry menu bar, sprucing up content with Spry widgets, building online forms and validating input, using PHP to process a form, working with PHP includes and templates, setting up mysql and phpmyadmin, storing records in a database, controlling access to your site, searching records and handling dates, using XSLT to display live news feeds and XML and the use of SPRY to display XML.
It contains important information for Mac users on how to set up the ideal development environment, using Mac OSX.

I liked the approach and treatment that is given within the section ‘using PHP to process a form’. I would have liked to see more about normal online forms in the chapter that deals with ’storing records in a database’ which only makes reference to the main points and data types. Obviously, in the examples shown in the book they are working on a single table and I understand that it is easier to explain but it would have been good to mention the normal forms.

It’s nice to see that the reader is introduced to Server Behaviours which are quite important in saving time.

The process in this section reminds us of what was seen during the webinar of October 2007.

In summary, it is noteworthy to say that the use of SPRY and XML can actually help you understand this way of working.
Without doubt this is a ‘Bible’ for whoever is just starting to develop web applications and a guidebook for those already involved in developing.

Una verdadera biblia sobre este producto que muchos utilizamos a diario enfocado en las tecnologías que menciona desde su portada.

El contenido del mismo que comienza con una introducción del conocido Tom Muck abarca el proceso del desarrollo web desde la configuración del entorno de desarrollo con php hasta la aplicación de la librería spry.

En sus diversos capítulos veremos creación de estilos, barras de navegación mediante spry, visualizar contenidos aprovechando los widget de spry, crear formularios convalidación mediante spry,  procesar formularios con php, uso de includes y plantillas, configurar mysql y phpmyadmin, almacenar registros en nuestra base de datos, aplicar seguridad para controlar el acceso, búsqueda de registros, manejo de fechas, xslt, spry para visualizar xmls.

Importante para usuarios mac que disponen de la explicación para configurar el entorno de trabajo en dicha plataforma.

Me ha gustado el enfoque y tratamiento. Que hace dentro del apartado de uso de  php para procesar formularios. Pero así como me gusta algo otras cosas no como ser la falta de un apartado sobre firmas normales dentro del capítulo en que abarca a las bases de datos para almacenar registros y donde hace referencia principalmente en las claves primarias y tipos de datos. La segunda forma normal acaso no es importante?  Obviamente en los ejemplos trabaja sobre una única tabla que entiendo es más fácil de explicar pero hubiera sido bueno que mencionara las formas normales.

Es bueno ver que introduce al lector en el desarrollo se los comportamientos de servidor que son algo importante para ahorrar tiempo.

El proceso en este apartado recuerda a lo visto a lo largo del webinar de octubre 2007 (http://groups.adobe.com/posts/f0b8aeb874)

Para finalizar es destacable el trabajo con spry y xml que puede ayudar a comprender está forma de trabajo.

Sin duda una “biblia” para quien quiera comenzar en el desarrollo de aplicaciones web y como apoyo para recientemente iniciados.

In effect it’s a reference book about this up and coming technology: Ajax.

Ajax The Definitive Guide provides a strong theoretical basis for understanding this technology and it’s good reading to refresh your knowledge and learn new concepts.
I have many bookmarks in this book, in fact it is full of Post It notes:), in subjects such as JSON and its comparison with xml as well as a viewpoint of when to use either. The Document Object Model programming and use of tables. The excellent reference table on typographic families has been useful to make a summary of those fonts which correspond to the Linux, Mac and Windows platforms and distribute them to the designers of our team.

I must admit that on picking up the book for the first time I went straight to the appendix. Here you’ll find topics such as XML and XSLT, references to frameworks, libraries and kits used (prototype, script.aculo.us, MooTools, Dojo, Sarissa, and MochiKit, JQuery) and a list of web APIs.
Throughout the book there are lots of examples, most being taken from pure JavaScript without the use of libraries which undoubtedly will help us out on the odd occasion.

There were topics that I have not looked at, probably because I am not interested in them – at least for the moment. These topics are those that are devoted to games and animations, but this might be what interests you.

Finally, I found myself jumping between topics that were adapted to projects I’m working on and in which I could apply what I’d seen.
There are a few paragraphs on browser integration from the viewpoint of navigation as boxes and popups that kept me entertained for a while. It’s amazing how different alerts are managed by multiple browser types.
Another interesting part of the book is everything that makes reference to the customization of the site by the user through the use typeface sizes and the different themed designs of our website.

One thing that I liked about the book that it makes crystal clear is the fact that we have to be smart about how we use a framework thus avoiding its indiscriminate use that only makes our website “heavier”.
Summing up it’s been a good book to read and I’ve consulted it for specific issues although I must admit that the “wheel has already been invented” in this occasion.

Efectivamente una guía de referencia sobre esta tecnología en auge.

Ajax The Definitive Guide tiene una fuerte base teórica  para poder comprender esta tecnología  y que es bueno leer para refrescar y aprender nuevos conceptos.

He puesto muchos bookmarks en este libro, de hecho está lleno de postit ,  en temas como json y su comparación con xml así como el punto de vista de cuando usar cada uno. El DOM y las tablas. La excelente tabla de referencia sobre familias tipográficas que me ha servido para hacer un resumen de las que corresponden a las plataformas linux/max/windows y distribuirla a los diseñadores del equipo.

Reconozco que al dar la primer vista al libro y ver sus apéndices pues fue donde primero acudí. Estos abarcan temas interesantes como xml y xslt, referencias de los frameworks, librerías y kits más utilizados (prototype, script.aculo.us, rico, mootools, dojo, sarissa, mochikit y jquery ) y un listado de apis de web services.

A lo largo de todo el libro hay muchísimos ejemplos y la mayoría tratados desde Javascript puro sin utilización de librerías. Los cuales nos servirán sin duda alguna en alguna ocasión.

Hubo temas que no he mirado pues no me interesan, al menos de momento, como ser los dedicados a juegos y animaciones. Quizás a otros sea lo que más les interese

Finalmente fui saltando entre temas que se adaptaban con los desarrollos en los que me encontraba y donde podía aplicar lo visto.

Hay unos apartados sobre integración con el navegador tanto desde el punto de vista de navegación como de cajas y popups que me han entretenido un buen rato. Tienen idea que tan distinto se ve un alert en los diferentes browser? Pues hay unas capturas para justificar porque crear nuestro propio alert y tratamiento de errores.

Otra parte del libro interesante es todo lo referido a personalización del sitio por parte del usuario a través de diferentes tamaños tipográficos y temas de diseño de nuestro sitio web.

Algo que me gusto es que deja claro que tenemos que ser inteligentes a la hora de utilizar un framework evitando el uso indiscriminado que solo hace que nuestro sitio pese mas.

En resumen me ha servido leerlo y lo consultó para temas puntuales pues siempre pienso que la rueda….ya se invento.

Grab yourself a copy of this book as you would have wanted to know just how this library guide works in depth or because you had a few doubts that weren’t resolved via the many blogs and forums on the internet.

“With this book I resolved the problems I had after reading the many examples and tips this book had to offer”.

The chapters of this book cover installation and the configuration of the library, convert and edit, composition and assembly, identification and importing of animations. There’s also a chapter on the “conjure” utility, application in web projects, development of an application for e-cards and two appendixes aimed at extracting information from your files such as size, compression levels, and source information.

What I liked most was the use of an xml sheet to give the commands and orders. It reminded me of the old .Bat files which could also be used in a pc, or even the bash files which could also be used in a Linux server; then again, the xml page makes it better suited for batch processing.

Since I am currently developing projects in PHP, Chapter 8 was my first stop where it explains how to use the gallery along with examples of the classic “Captcha” and the usage of watermarks. I expected many more examples but it was clear that in the previous chapters there were quite a few and had explanations on how to use them in PHP as you could toy around and modify them.

The e-card application is interesting and worthwhile playing around with its possibilities. It reminded me of Apple’s program.

Finally, you should bear in mind that this is a book to be used as a reference guide and as the front cover states …”friendly tutorial and tips guide”…Just don’t expect anything else

Este libro consta de 10 capítulos que hacen fiel referencia a lo que desde la portada indican “rápido y amigable tutorial con una guía de tips”.

Solicite este libro ya que estaba deseando  conocer el funcionamiento de esta librería en profundidad y porque tenía algunas dudas que no resolvía mediante foros, blogs, etc.

Mediante este libro sumando tips pude resolver el inconveniente. Pero luego de leer diversos ejemplos y tips.

Los capítulos de este libro abarcan la instalación y configuración de la librería, convertir y modificar, composición y montaje, identificación muestra e importación, animación, un capítulo sobre “conjuros”, aplicación en proyectos web, desarrollo de una aplicación para e-cards y dos apéndices orientados a la instalación de nuevas fuentes y el trabajo de compresión.

Lo que más me ha gustado es lo relativo al trabajo de un xml para dar las órdenes a realizar. Me recordó a los viejos archivos .bat,  que dicho sea de paso también podría haber utilizado en mi pc, o bien a los archivos bash,  que también podría usarse en el servidor linux, pero el xml lo hace más claro al proceso por lotes.

Dado que actualmente estoy desarrollando en php el capítulo 8 fue de los primeros en ver.  Donde se explica cómo utilizar la librería y hay ejemplos del clásico captcha y la aplicación de marcas de agua. Me esperaba muchos más ejemplos pero claro está que en los capítulos anteriores hay muchos y al explicar cómo utilizarla desde php pues ya se podría “jugar” con ellos.

La aplicación de e-cards es interesante y vale la pena ponerse a jugar con las posibilidades. Me recordó a la de apple.

Finalmente tener claro que es un libro para tener como guía de referencia y como su portada indica…ejemplos y tips…. No le pidas más

This book begins with a short introduction about Html and xHtml including differences between both syntaxs. But this is a very short introduction that shows interesting examples from its front pages, like the paragraph that deals about “quirks mode” or same famous web sites like cssbeauty.com. If someone takes away the DTD everything collapses.

We are reminded the subject about the boxes model in previous browsers like IE4,IE5, IE5.5, where the content took the margins, + the edge, + the padding as a box measure, and not as current browsers that only takes the content. There are many ways to treat them (hacks), but the most common is the one that uses conditional comments.

Later, it talks about style sheets. It explains how to work with styles for big sites. It also introduces us to microformats (http://www.microformats.org/wiki/what-are-microformats) and how to obtain the famous vcard.

In the same chapter (chapter 2), I have discovered something important: the way to solve the problem about showing text/css files in apache, a common problem when stylesheets don´t load. We can fix it with a simple line in the. Htaccess.

In chapter three we are going to work with Ajax and Unobtrusive Scripting. This chapter makes some brief references to how to work with jQuery. It also mentions other Frameworks “ where a great approach is done despiste of Frameworks is done by Ajax. Where the use of themselve has to be thought previously

In the next chapter there is an example of a CSS style declaration.

Where it can be assigned only to buttons since in some cases inputs are defined affecting text and buttons. This is a point to consider

Chapter 4 talks about software applications using asp.net. and because I am not currently working with it I have forgotten it a bit

In chapter 6 we can see real work cases such as EverythingTori.com. We can see the way they began and how they created it own prototype, it site map and how to deal with clients. They decided to use a cms open source (ExpressionEngine´s) and they show us the texts they used in their meetings. Very interesting.

The same approach is repeated in the AOL.com case: they focus on the webpage sizes and show us JS codes to calculate the size of a site. They also explain some advices for developing big sites.

This is not a big book, there are only 288 pages and my last contribution can be found in the appendix to checking the optimizing page load:

There are some references to Firebug and finally references to CSS selectors. We knew about some of them and others we didn’t know.

It is a very interesting book and quiet easy to read, because in a day you can grasp all its contents.

Este libro desde su inicio empieza con una breve introducción de lo que es Hml y xHtml las diferencias de sintaxis entre ambos. Pero esta breve introducción dura nada y ya en sus primeras páginas comienza a mostrar ejemplos interesantes como el caso del apartado que trata el tema del “quirks mode” y como algunas páginas conocidas, como cssbeauty.com, si alguien le saca el DTD se desmonta todo.

Se nos recuerda el tema del modelo de cajas donde en anteriores exploradores como IE4,IE5, IE5.5 el contenido tomaba los márgenes + el borde + el padding como medida de caja y no como ahora, en actuales navegadores, solo el contenido. Para este tema hay muchas formas de tratarlos (hacks) y parece que el preferido sigue siendo el de usar los comentarios condicionales.

Al avanzar empieza a tratar el tema de hojas de estilo donde nos cuentan la forma de trabajar con los estilos para grandes sitios. También nos hace una introducción a los micro formatos como tener el famoso vcard

En el mismo capítulo 2 he descubierto algo que es una de mis primeras señalizaciones lo de ver la solución en apache para obligar que muestre los archivos como text/css que es algo común cuando vemos alguna página que el estilo no se carga. Con una simple línea en el .htaccess podemos solucionarlo.

Al pasar de capitulo nos vamos a trabajar con Ajax y Unobtrusive Scripting. Aquí hace unas breves referencias al trabajo con jQuery y se mencionan otros Frameworks donde se hace un gran planteo a pesar de que los Frameworks nos hacen el Ajax simple el uso de los mismos debe ser una decisión razonada previamente.

Recuerdo que leyendo en el próximo capitulo también marcado por mi veo un ejemplo de la declaración de un estilo css

input[type=submit] { }

Donde se puede asignar solo a los botones pues en algunos casos definen los input afectando tanto a campos de texto como a botones. Es un buen apunte a tomar.

Este libro en el capítulo 4 trata temas basándose en aplicaciones de software pero utilizando asp.net y por razones de que no es una plataforma con la que trabaje actualmente pues lo he dejado de lado.

Ya en el capítulo 6 empezamos a ver caso de trabajos reales como en este caso EverythingTori.com donde muestran como empezaron y como crearon su prototipo ,el mapa del sitio, discutir con el cliente el mismo. Como siguieron mostrando sus prototipos y en este caso la decisión de usar un cms open source (ExpressionEngine´s). Aprovechan y nos muestran algo de textos sobre las reuniones que han tenido. La verdad muy interesante

Este mismo planteo lo repiten en parte para el caso de AOL.com donde se centran en el tema de los tamaños de la pagina y aprovechan a mostrarnos un código JS para calcular el tamaño de una página. Se nos explica aquí cosas a tener en cuenta en desarrollo de sitios de gran tamaño.

Este libro no es un libro muy extenso son 288 páginas y mis últimas anotaciones han sido en el apéndice c donde tenemos algunas urls para comprobar la optimización de carga de la página como ser:
